SYMBIOTIC VILLA IN ABU DHABI

Our proposal is centered around an architectural concept that places a strong emphasis on maximizing inhabitant comfort through optimized spatial utilization, thoughtfully chosen materials, enhanced privacy, and overall structural functionality.

Simultaneously, we have integrated innovative modern technologies alongside traditional architectural solutions like windcatcher towers and the Earth-Air Tunnel System. This harmonious blend of ancient and contemporary approaches contributes to a sustainable design and minimizes the house’s annual energy consumption.

Our primary design goal was to enhance the comfort of residents in terms of living space and overall living conditions, all while maintaining cost-effectiveness in both construction and ongoing operations. We achieved this objective through the following means:

  1. Implementing tailored architectural solutions that optimize shading, minimize sun exposure, and promote natural ventilation.

  2. Utilizing durable, sustainable, and reusable materials with a minimal carbon footprint and low maintenance requirements.

  3. Incorporating advanced, integrated technical solutions under the control of a smart management system to reduce energy consumption.

SELF-SUSTAINABILITY:

Despite the harsh Abu Dhabi’s climate, the house operates with minimal energy consumption while maintaining a comfortable living environment in terms of space, lighting, air quality, and temperature. This accomplishment is attributed to the architectural strategies and solutions we have adopted, including:

  • The octagonal inner void that facilitates natural ventilation

  • Utilization of mashrabiyas

  • Ventilated facades and our exterior wall composition

  • The Earth Air Tunnel System (E.A.T.S.)

  • A ventilation unit with a heat exchanger and cooling coil

  • A reverse osmosis water filtration system

  • Solar electrical panels and solar water heating

  • An outdoor cool mist system

  • Integration of a smart management control unit

Most of the energy requirements, if not all, can be met during the daytime through the rooftop electrical solar panels and water heating system. At night, the primary AC unit can be switched off, and cooling duties are transferred to the ventilation unit. This unit, alongside a cooling coil, draws power from the home battery storage system and is under the intelligent control of the management unit. It can intake fresh air either directly from the outside or through the E.A.T.S. system, depending on external temperatures. During nighttime, it prioritizes ensuring clean air at an ideal temperature and humidity level in the bedrooms.

When the house operates off the grid, the domestic water comes from a tank located in the technical room and from the AC and ventilation dehumidifiers when they are in operation. Drinking water is filtered through a reverse osmosis filtering unit equipped with a remineralization unit.

Again, when off-grid, the water stored in the pool can be used for watering the garden.
